Pakistan’s short-term inflation gauge accelerated sharply last week, driven by steep increases in the cost of edible oils and flour.

The Sensitive Price Index (SPI), which tracks price movements for essential consumer goods, rose 9.29% year-on-year for the week ending August 4, according to data reported by Dawn Business.

The surge in food prices is directly linked to recent hikes in fuel rates, which have increased transportation and production costs across the supply chain.

Essential items including live chicken and vegetables have also seen significant price increases, compounding the pressure on household budgets.

The spike in energy costs is acting as a primary transmission mechanism, pushing up the final price of staple goods.

In response to the rapid price escalation, Pakistan’s planning minister has ordered a loose food survey to assess the situation.
