Thailand has unveiled the Siam Silica framework, a national roadmap designed to establish a domestic semiconductor ecosystem and position the country as a leading hub within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The initiative marks a strategic pivot for the Southeast Asian economy, which analysts note is entering the global chip race later than some regional competitors and must therefore focus on becoming indispensable to the industry's supply chain.
The framework outlines plans to build out local infrastructure and attract investment, aiming to transform Thailand from a traditional assembly base into a more integrated player in the semiconductor value chain.
This move aligns with broader regional trends, as neighboring countries such as Indonesia and Vietnam have also announced strategic initiatives to leverage natural resources and labor advantages to capture semiconductor manufacturing capacity.
Indonesia, for instance, has highlighted its vast silica sand reserves as a key asset in its bid to become a significant global supplier, while Vietnam has seen substantial foreign direct investment in chip packaging and testing.
The Siam Silica framework seeks to differentiate Thailand by focusing on ecosystem development and strategic positioning within ASEAN, rather than competing solely on raw material endowments.
