Currency in circulation in Nigeria has climbed to N5.73 trillion, driven by the issuance of 3.43 billion banknotes during the year.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) disclosed that the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc (NSPM) supplied 1.23 billion of these notes, while foreign printers delivered the remaining 2.20 billion units.

This development follows a period of significant foreign exchange inflows, with Nigeria recording $109.

The increase marks a notable shift from June 2026, when currency in circulation had fallen to N5.52 trillion.

That earlier reduction was part of the CBN’s strategy to manage monetization and control liquidity in the economy.

The current rise suggests a renewed need for physical cash or a relaxation of previous constraints on note issuance.

This development follows a period of significant foreign exchange inflows, with Nigeria recording $109.86 billion in 2025.
