The Malaysian state of Sabah is set to acquire a 40% stake in a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project operated by national oil company Petronas.
The agreement, confirmed by Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor, marks a significant shift in ownership structure for the state’s energy assets, granting local authorities a direct equity position in the production facility.
The move aligns with broader efforts to maximize local value capture from Malaysia’s gas reserves.
By taking a substantial minority stake, Sabah secures a direct revenue stream from the FLNG unit, which is critical for monetizing offshore gas fields that may not be economically viable for pipeline development.
This structure allows for faster deployment of production capacity compared to traditional onshore liquefaction plants.
Petronas has been actively expanding its LNG portfolio and securing long-term offtake agreements to support Asian demand.
