The head of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP) has positioned a proposed tunnel beneath the Bering Strait as a potential landmark for restoring diplomatic and economic relations between Russia and the United States.

Alexander Shokhin stated that the project serves as a powerful symbol of reconciliation, despite the immense technical and financial challenges involved.

He emphasized that for the tunnel to be economically viable, it would require the construction of extensive supporting infrastructure, including new railways and road networks connecting the Chukotka region to Alaska.

The comments come amid a backdrop of heightened geopolitical tension in global shipping lanes.

Recent incidents, including a Russian warship firing warning shots at a British yacht in the English Channel, have underscored the fragility of maritime security and the broader strain on international trade routes.

While the Bering Strait proposal remains largely theoretical, Shokhin’s remarks highlight the Russian business community’s interest in long-term infrastructure projects that could bridge the geopolitical divide.
