Bancolombia and its fintech subsidiary Wompi have launched a nationwide initiative to expand digital payment infrastructure across 130 zones in Colombia.

The campaign, dubbed 'Ruta por Colombia,' focuses on simplifying the merchant onboarding process and distributing point-of-sale terminals to businesses in underserved areas.

The move signals a strategic push to deepen the bank’s footprint in the country’s fragmented retail payment landscape.

The expansion aligns with Bancolombia’s broader turnaround strategy, which has seen the lender surge from a five-year profit trough to capture nearly half of all earnings in the Colombian banking sector by mid-2026.

By leveraging Wompi’s digital platform, the bank aims to convert traditional cash-based transactions into digital flows, thereby increasing transaction volume and data capture across its network.

This strategy complements the bank’s recent margin expansion, driven by higher fee income and improved operational efficiency.
