Infrastructure investor Meridiam has acquired a majority stake in the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), the subsea electricity cable linking Cyprus and Israel.

The transaction marks a significant shift in the ownership structure of the eastern Mediterranean’s key energy infrastructure, bringing a major private equity player into the region’s power grid development.

The move follows regulatory green lights from the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA), which granted both ownership and management licenses for the interconnector in late September 2025.

These approvals cleared the path for private investment and operational control, allowing Meridiam to step in as the primary stakeholder.

The acquisition underscores growing investor interest in cross-border energy assets amid Europe’s push for greater grid resilience and renewable integration.

The GSI project is part of a wider regional strategy to enhance energy security and market coupling in the eastern Mediterranean.
