Stanislav Luchanov, the commander of Ukraine’s 155th "Anne of Kyiv" mechanized brigade, has been charged with kidnapping and murder in connection with the deaths of two civilians in Kyiv Oblast.

Several other members of the brigade are also facing charges in the case, which authorities describe as a scandal with a trivial motive.

The incident marks a significant internal security challenge for the Ukrainian military, which is already grappling with the immense pressures of a prolonged conflict.

The legal proceedings against Luchanov come as new assessments highlight the staggering human cost of the war for Russia.

A recent report estimates that Russian military losses have reached approximately 1.4 million soldiers since the full-scale invasion began.

This figure encompasses those killed, missing, or wounded, underscoring the attritional nature of the fighting and the severe strain on Moscow's military resources.
