The death toll from an ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing facility in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district has risen to 10, according to the state’s Health and Family Welfare Department.

Sixty-eight individuals remain hospitalized, with reports indicating that the majority of those affected are migrant workers.

The incident occurred at a processing and export unit, raising immediate concerns about operational continuity in the region’s seafood supply chain.

The accident underscores the safety risks inherent in industrial cold-chain operations, where ammonia is widely used as a refrigerant.

While the immediate impact is humanitarian, the closure of the facility could create short-term bottlenecks for seafood exports from the region, particularly for shrimp and other high-value marine products.

Traders and supply chain managers are likely assessing the extent of the disruption to local export volumes.
