The head of the men's professional tennis tour has issued a stark warning that the sport is leaving billions of dollars on the table by failing to consolidate its commercial operations.
Andrea Gaudenzi, chairman of the ATP, stated that the current fragmentation between tours and tournaments is a structural drag on growth, arguing that a unified approach could potentially double the sport's annual turnover from its current US$3.5 billion level.
Gaudenzi's comments highlight a growing tension within professional tennis governance.
The ATP, which organizes the men's tour, operates separately from the four Grand Slam tournaments and the WTA, which runs the women's tour.
This siloed structure means that media rights, sponsorship deals, and commercial partnerships are negotiated independently, diluting the collective bargaining power of the sport.
By combining forces, Gaudenzi suggests, the industry could present a single, more attractive product to global advertisers and broadcasters.
