A 73-year-old Buddhist monk from Butterworth has been named the winner of the 124th Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) Sijil Simpanan Premium (SSP) Millionaire draw, according to local media reports.

Chan Chai Siang, the winner, accumulated the winning certificate through a combination of ang pow (red packet) savings and donations received over time.

The win marks a notable instance of retail participation in Malaysia's state-backed savings scheme, which remains a popular vehicle for small-scale investors seeking lottery-linked returns on their deposits.

The SSP program, operated by BSN, allows depositors to enter a monthly draw for a RM1 million prize while earning interest on their savings.

The scheme has long been a staple of Malaysia's retail financial landscape, appealing to individuals who view the lottery component as a low-stakes opportunity for significant windfalls.

Chan's victory, funded by community donations and traditional holiday gifts, reflects the cultural integration of the program into everyday financial habits.
