Colombia’s proven natural gas reserves have contracted by 54.6% between 2018 and 2025, according to data reported by La República.
The long-term erosion of the resource base highlights the persistent challenge of reserve replacement in the country’s energy sector, despite recent efforts to stabilize production levels.
This data aligns with earlier warnings from Naturgas, Colombia’s natural gas industry association, which previously reported a 17% decline in proven reserves.
The reserves-to-production (R/P) ratio remained flat at 5.9 years in 2025, unchanged from the previous year.
This metric indicates that, at current production rates, the country’s proven gas reserves would be exhausted in less than six years.
The stagnation in the R/P ratio suggests that production volumes have not outpaced the depletion of known reserves, leaving the sector vulnerable to supply shocks.
This data aligns with earlier warnings from Naturgas, Colombia’s natural gas industry association, which previously reported a 17% decline in proven reserves.
