An explosion at a gas processing facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan industrial zone has killed at least 13 people and injured 66 others, according to Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi.
The minister confirmed the casualty figures on Sunday, describing the incident as an accident rather than a deliberate act.
The blast occurred at the Barzan LNG plant, a critical node in the world’s largest liquefied natural gas export hub.
Ras Laffan accounts for the vast majority of Qatar’s LNG production, which is primarily destined for Asian markets.
Any sustained disruption to operations at this site would immediately tighten global supply, particularly for Japan and South Korea, which rely heavily on Qatari cargoes.
Markets reacted swiftly to the news, with natural gas futures climbing on fears of a supply shock.
