TotalEnergies has officially restarted its roughly $20 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Mozambique, marking a significant turnaround for the development that was halted four years ago by an insurgency in the Cabo Delgado province.

The French energy major confirmed that operations are back in motion, with a new target for first gas set for 2029.

The restart represents a critical juncture for global LNG supply dynamics.

The project, located on the Afungi peninsula, was one of the most significant offline gas projects in the world when it was suspended.

Its return to the active pipeline adds tangible supply potential to a market that has been navigating tightness and geopolitical volatility.

While the 2029 timeline remains several years away, the removal of the indefinite suspension status reduces uncertainty for long-term offtake agreements and regional energy planning.
