The Bank of England has appointed Rhys Phillips as its next Chief Cashier and Director of Notes.

Governor Andrew Bailey announced the appointment, confirming that Phillips will assume the position on 19 October 2026.

The Chief Cashier is responsible for the production and distribution of banknotes, as well as the security of the UK's currency.

The role is a senior operational post within the central bank, distinct from the Monetary Policy Committee's interest rate-setting functions.

The appointment comes as the Bank of England continues to navigate internal policy dynamics.

Recent coverage has highlighted efforts by the Bank's chief economist to address concerns over dissenting votes within the MPC, emphasizing that such disagreements are part of normal policy deliberation rather than an attempt to disrupt consensus.
