The intensive two-week programme brought together 14 participants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds to strengthen their understanding of blue carbon science and explore its application in policy development and climate action.
"The Blue Carbon Science and Policy two-week course brought together fourteen students from diverse backgrounds and at different stages of our academic and professional careers in the picturesque coastal town of St Andrews. It felt as though we were attending our very own COP2026, where we exchanged ideas, shared experiences from our home countries, and built lasting friendships, all while working toward a common goal: developing a critical understanding of blue carbon science and translating that knowledge into effective policy.
Throughout the course, I was fully immersed in the world of blue carbon science through fieldwork, laboratory exercises, presentations, and report writing, guided by exceptional instructors from the University of St Andrews and guest lecturers who are internationally recognized experts in the field. By successfully completing this course, I gained invaluable knowledge, created lifelong memories, formed thirteen new friendships, and strengthened my understanding of blue carbon science. I also enhanced my capacity to provide sound advice on blue carbon policy and to actively support blue carbon initiatives that contribute to the continued development of Belize's blue economy," Sabal explained.
Sabal also expressed gratitude to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for awarding her the Blue Carbon Scholarship, the Inter-American Development Bank for co-financing her participation in the programme, and the Ministry of Blue Economy & Marine Conservation for investing in the professional growth of its staff to strengthen climate resilience, promote sustainable development, and enhance social and economic well-being.
The Ministry said that it is proud to support opportunities that strengthen the technical capacity of its officers and contribute to the advancement of evidence-based policies for the sustainable management of Belize's marine and coastal resources.
