Bosnia and Herzegovina is marking the 31st anniversary of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide with a Day of Mourning in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) entity and commemorative tributes across Sarajevo, as the country honours more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys killed in July 1995.

The Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina declared July 11 a Day of Mourning to commemorate the victims of the genocide and express solidarity with their families. The decision, adopted on July 6, requires flags of Bosnia and Herzegovina to be flown at half-mast on government buildings, public institutions and other legal entities throughout the FBiH.

The FBiH government said the measure was adopted to honour the victims of the Srebrenica genocide and to express condolences and compassion for their families.

Public cultural and entertainment events are prohibited during the Day of Mourning, while media organizations are required to adjust their programming in line with the commemorative observance.

In Sarajevo Canton, authorities announced that the civil protection warning system will sound the "all clear" signal at exactly 12 pm, on July 11. The signal will be broadcast as a continuous tone lasting 60 seconds.

The Sarajevo Canton Civil Protection Administration has called on residents to stop what they are doing during the signal. Pedestrians are encouraged to pause, while drivers are asked to safely stop their vehicles as a gesture of respect for the victims of the genocide.

The symbolic tribute comes as Bosnia and the international community commemorate the genocide in which more than 8,000 Bosniaks were murdered following the fall of the UN-protected enclave of Srebrenica.

Meanwhile, preparations continue at the Srebrenica Memorial Center in Potocari, where graves have been prepared for the burial of 10 newly identified genocide victims during the July 11 commemoration. The victims were between 20 and 56 years old at the time of their deaths.

To date, 6,772 victims of the Srebrenica genocide have been buried at the Memorial Center in Potocari.
