European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has indicated she would not rule out stepping down from her role to run for the French presidency.
In an interview with the business daily Les Echos, Lagarde stated she does not exclude the possibility of resigning from the ECB to represent the European Greens in the upcoming election.
The remarks introduce a fresh variable into the ECB’s leadership outlook.
While Lagarde has maintained a hawkish stance on inflation, signaling readiness to raise rates if necessary, her potential departure could influence market expectations regarding the continuity of the current monetary policy framework.
The central bank recently held its key interest rates unchanged during its July policy meeting, marking a pause in its tightening cycle.
Markets are likely to scrutinize any further developments regarding Lagarde’s political ambitions.
