Cao Liangliang, a former principal engineer and director at Google DeepMind, has returned to Hong Kong to take up a position at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).

The move marks a significant acquisition of talent for the region's artificial intelligence ecosystem, bringing Silicon Valley expertise in foundational AI systems to a local academic and research setting.

Cao, an IEEE Fellow, previously held key architectural roles at Google, Apple, and IBM.

His departure from the US tech sector to join PolyU underscores Hong Kong's growing appeal as a destination for top-tier AI researchers, despite ongoing global competition for technical talent.

The appointment is likely to bolster the university's research capabilities and strengthen ties between academia and the commercial AI sector in the region.

The news arrives as Chinese and Hong Kong equity markets have staged a sharp recovery, erasing recent losses that were heavily influenced by selling in semiconductor stocks.
