Ecuador’s state-owned oil company, Petroecuador, has eliminated 180 gas flares in the Amazon region over the past four years, according to a report by La República.
The operational shift has resulted in a reduction of approximately 710,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, marking a significant step in the company’s environmental compliance efforts.
The reduction in flaring reflects improved gas capture infrastructure and operational efficiency at key production sites.
While the environmental impact is notable, the move does not signal a major change in Ecuador’s crude output or export capacity.
The focus remains on mitigating the environmental footprint of existing production rather than expanding reserves or increasing supply.
This development comes amid broader challenges in the region’s energy sector.
