Philippine Defence Minister Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has declared that diplomatic talks with China are currently "not possible," citing Beijing's imposition of sanctions and the looming threat of anti-spy legislation.

The statement marks a significant escalation in rhetoric from Manila, which has increasingly adopted a confrontational posture regarding maritime sovereignty in the South China Sea.

Teodoro, who is himself blacklisted by Beijing and barred from entering China, emphasized that the Philippines would not engage in negotiations while under what he described as coercive pressure.

His comments come amid a broader deterioration in bilateral relations, with China recently issuing formal legal warnings to both the Philippines and Japan regarding their planned maritime border discussions.

Beijing characterized these talks as "internationally wrongful," asserting its right to hold both nations accountable.

The hardening of Manila's position adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile region.
