The Confederation of Portuguese Farmers (CAP) has escalated its pressure on Lisbon, demanding a state aid package of at least €300 million to offset rising costs for fertilizers and fuel.

The sector body accused the government of being "offline" and failing to address the immediate financial strain on producers, particularly as neighboring Spain has mobilized significantly larger resources for its agricultural sector.

1 billion in aid to its farmers, Portugal’s government announced only €20 million in April.

The call for support comes against a backdrop of widening policy divergence within the Iberian Peninsula.

While Spain has deployed more than €1.1 billion in aid to its farmers, Portugal’s government announced only €20 million in April.

CAP argues that this disparity is eroding the competitiveness of Portuguese agribusiness, leaving local producers at a structural disadvantage compared to their Spanish counterparts.

This latest demand adds to existing relief efforts already in motion.
