Rogers Communications has agreed to acquire the remaining 25% stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) from Kilmer Sports for $4.35 billion, a move that grants the telecom operator full ownership of the Toronto-based sports and entertainment conglomerate.
The transaction marks the culmination of a strategic shift for Rogers, which has gradually increased its influence over the company that owns the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, and Scotiabank Arena.
By removing Kilmer Sports as a partner, Rogers eliminates a potential source of strategic divergence and consolidates decision-making power over one of Canada's most valuable media and sports assets.
Kilmer Sports, led by Larry Tanenbaum, has been a significant player in the Canadian sports landscape, recently expanding its portfolio with investments in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL).
The exit from MLSE allows Kilmer to redirect capital toward new ventures while Rogers assumes complete responsibility for the operational and financial performance of the league franchises and venue.
The deal is subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.
