Tunisia has developed its first fully domestic autonomous surface vehicle (USV), marking a significant step in the country’s maritime technology sector.

The unmanned drone was designed and manufactured locally by deep-tech company IRIS, according to reports from La Presse de Tunisie.

The launch of the indigenous USV comes at a time of heightened geopolitical pressure on global trade routes.

Regional hostilities have intensified recently, with Iran launching drone assaults targeting Bahrain and a commercial vessel being struck in the Strait of Hormuz.

These events underscore the growing vulnerability of maritime infrastructure and the increasing demand for advanced surveillance and security technologies in contested waters.

For investors and industry observers, the development highlights Tunisia’s strategic pivot toward self-reliance in maritime defense and monitoring.
