German retailers posted an unexpected rise in revenue in May, growing 1.0% month-on-month according to data released Tuesday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

The figure defied market expectations for a slowdown, signaling that consumer spending remained robust despite broader economic headwinds.

The headline growth masks underlying pressure, however.

Inflation-adjusted sales showed a more muted performance, indicating that much of the nominal increase was driven by higher price levels rather than a surge in volume.

This dynamic suggests that while households are continuing to spend, their real purchasing power remains constrained by persistent inflation.

The timing of the data is critical for market participants.
