The Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) has formally requested the Indian government to eliminate license fees levied on revenue generated from pure internet services.
The industry body argues that removing these charges would enhance market competition and expand consumer choice within the country's digital ecosystem.
Pure internet services were incorporated into the Unified Licensing regime around 2013 following a revision of telecommunications regulations.
ISPAI contends that the current fee structure is outdated and imposes unnecessary costs on providers that do not offer traditional telephony or broadcasting services, thereby hindering the growth of the pure-play internet segment.
The association's appeal highlights a broader push by industry stakeholders to align regulatory frameworks with the evolving nature of digital services.
By distinguishing pure internet revenue from other telecom services, ISPAI aims to create a more level playing field for internet-only providers against established telecom operators.
