An explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas complex has killed at least 13 people and injured dozens, triggering a sharp repricing in global LNG markets.
The blast occurred at the Barzan local gas supply facility on Sunday evening during a restart procedure, according to initial reports.
Qatar Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi confirmed the casualty figures, noting that 66 others were injured in the incident.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the energy sector, with LNG futures spiking on fears of immediate supply disruption.
Ras Laffan is the heart of Qatar’s LNG production, home to the North Field expansion projects that are critical to meeting growing global demand.
Any operational halt at the Barzan facility, which supplies feed gas to the liquefaction trains, could curtail output in the short term.
