Malaysia’s Petronas has identified a new natural gas discovery at its offshore Block 52 in Suriname, according to remarks by Surinamese President Jennifer Simons on Tuesday.
The announcement confirms continued resource potential in the South American territory, where the Malaysian state-owned energy giant is already advancing oil development plans.
The discovery reinforces the strategic importance of Block 52, which is on track for a commercial oil production declaration within the next 18 months.
Establishing dual hydrocarbon output from a single offshore site would significantly enhance the asset’s economics and extend its production life.
For Petronas, this adds to its growing portfolio of international gas assets, diversifying supply sources beyond its traditional Southeast Asian base.
While the immediate impact on global gas markets is likely muted given the scale of existing supply, the find supports Petronas’s long-term growth narrative.
