An explosion at a liquefied natural gas processing facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City has triggered a sharp reassessment of supply risks in the global gas market.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening at the Barzan local gas supply facility, has resulted in 54 injuries and left 18 people missing, according to the country’s Interior Ministry.

Authorities have attributed the blast to a technical malfunction during operations.

Natural gas prices surged in early trading as traders priced in the potential for immediate output curtailments.

Qatar is one of the world’s largest LNG exporters, and any disruption at Ras Laffan—a critical node in the global energy supply chain—carries significant weight for markets already sensitive to geopolitical and operational risks.

The Barzan plant is a key component of Qatar’s gas infrastructure, and its temporary shutdown could tighten spot supplies in the short term.
