The reconstructed Pogranichny automobile border crossing in Russia’s Primorsky Region has reopened with significantly expanded capacity, boosting the corridor’s ability to handle freight and passenger traffic between Russia and China.

The facility’s daily throughput limit has risen from 144 to 1,300 vehicles, supported by an increase in traffic lanes from eight to 22.

The upgrade is designed to alleviate bottlenecks at one of the key land links between the two economies.

The expansion underscores the growing reliance on overland routes for Russia-China trade, particularly as maritime options face increasing scrutiny under Western sanctions.

By enhancing the physical infrastructure at this chokepoint, Moscow aims to facilitate smoother movement of goods, including energy products and consumer items, while also supporting tourism flows.

The move aligns with broader efforts to pivot Russian exports toward Asian markets.
