Swiss President Guy Parmelin concluded a trip to Washington without securing a breakthrough in ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States.

Speaking after the talks, Parmelin emphasized that the traditional guarantees underpinning international trade have vanished, stating that "there are no more certainties in this world." Rather than announcing a new agreement, the Swiss leadership reaffirmed its commitment to a previously signed letter of intent, signaling a pause in aggressive bargaining as diplomatic channels remain open but stalled.

The lack of progress underscores the fragility of the current trade relationship between Bern and Washington.

Switzerland’s trade balance with the US has recently shifted from a surplus to a deficit, a structural change that had previously been viewed as potential leverage for Swiss negotiators.

However, the current diplomatic impasse suggests that economic fundamentals alone are insufficient to drive concessions in the current political climate.

The failure to secure a new deal leaves Swiss exporters exposed to existing tariff structures, with no immediate relief in sight.
