The Bank of Cyprus and JCC Payment Systems have been selected to participate in the European Central Bank’s pilot phase for the digital euro, marking a significant step in the island nation’s integration with the bloc’s digital currency infrastructure.
The Central Bank of Cyprus confirmed the selection on Tuesday, noting that the inclusion of both a major commercial bank and a key payment service provider ensures a comprehensive test of the digital euro’s retail capabilities.
The move places Cyprus among a diverse group of 36 payment service providers chosen from a pool of more than 50 applicants.
The ECB’s pilot program is designed to evaluate the technical and operational readiness of the digital euro, which is intended to coexist with physical cash rather than replace it.
By involving institutions like the Bank of Cyprus, the central bank aims to stress-test the system under real-world conditions, focusing on user experience, security, and interoperability with existing payment rails.
For traders and investors, the selection underscores the accelerating timeline for the digital euro’s development.
