The Bank of Central African States (BEAC) has launched a unified QR code payment system that enables customers to transact with merchants across all six member countries, irrespective of their banking provider or mobile wallet.
The rollout was inaugurated in Douala on 29 July by BEAC Governor Yvon Sana Bangui, marking a significant step toward financial integration in the CEMAC zone.
The new infrastructure removes friction for cross-border commerce by standardizing the point-of-sale experience.
Previously, consumers and businesses faced barriers when moving funds between different financial institutions within the bloc.
The unified code ensures that a payment initiated in one country can be settled instantly in another, leveraging the underlying interoperability of the regional banking network.
This development follows BEAC's earlier integration of its six member states into the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS).
