Botswana has accused Russia of systematically recruiting its citizens for the war in Ukraine under false pretenses, marking a new diplomatic escalation in Moscow's efforts to secure manpower.
The Ministry of International Relations in Gaborone stated on July 18 that individuals are being promised employment opportunities abroad, only to be forced into active combat upon arrival.
The ministry described the rate of these incidents as "alarming," signaling a coordinated effort by Russian operatives to target African nationals.
This development underscores the deepening manpower crisis facing Russian forces as the conflict in Ukraine enters a prolonged phase.
With domestic recruitment pools strained, Moscow has increasingly turned to foreign nationals, often using deceptive recruitment tactics that blur the line between voluntary migration and forced conscription.
The warning from Botswana arrives amid broader signs of intensifying hostilities.
