Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service (Receita Federal) has updated its official registry of habitual tax defaulters, raising the total number of listed companies to 22.
The agency announced the expansion on Tuesday, defining these entities as firms that accumulate significant tax debts in a frequent and unjustified manner, effectively treating non-payment as a core business strategy.
The updated list places a disproportionate focus on the tobacco industry, with the majority of the newly classified companies operating within that sector.
By categorizing these firms as "devedoras contumazes," the tax authority signals an intensified enforcement posture against businesses that systematically delay or avoid fiscal obligations.
This development arrives as Receita Federal manages broader fiscal operations, including the recent opening of the consultation window for the third batch of income tax refunds, with payouts scheduled for July 31.
The dual focus on refund distribution and aggressive default tracking underscores the agency’s efforts to balance taxpayer services with revenue protection.
