BTG Pactual has officially commenced banking operations in Uruguay, following the completion of its acquisition of HSBC's local subsidiary in June.

The São Paulo-based lender, Latin America's largest investment bank, began trading under its own brand on Monday, July 13, integrating the former HSBC branches into its growing regional network.

The move solidifies BTG Pactual's strategy to expand beyond Brazil's borders, targeting smaller but stable markets in the Southern Cone.

By absorbing HSBC's Uruguayan arm, the bank gains immediate access to established retail and corporate client bases without the need for organic branch construction.

This acquisition aligns with a broader trend of Brazilian financial institutions seeking growth opportunities outside their domestic market as competition intensifies at home.

The expansion comes amid a period of significant consolidation in Latin American banking.
