Prime Minister Mark Carney has endorsed the expansion of the Port of Vancouver, identifying the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project as essential for meeting Canada’s economic diversification goals.

The federal government is preparing to invest more than $10 billion to bolster export capacity and create jobs, according to reports from The Globe and Mail.

Carney stated that existing port infrastructure is insufficient to support Ottawa’s broader strategy for growing and diversifying the economy.

The endorsement marks a significant step forward for the infrastructure initiative, which aims to alleviate bottlenecks in one of North America’s busiest trade corridors.

The move aligns with previous efforts by the Carney administration to secure political support for major energy and transport infrastructure, including a proposed oil pipeline with a capacity of one million barrels per day.

By backing the port expansion, the government is signaling a commitment to reducing reliance on single-route dependencies and strengthening trade resilience.
