Colombia’s state-owned energy company Ecopetrol has detailed a supply strategy to manage power and gas demand during the upcoming El Niño weather phenomenon.

The plan includes mobilizing 234 megawatts of renewable energy capacity and securing 360 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas to ensure grid stability and thermal power supply.

The move underscores the critical role of regasification projects in Colombia’s energy mix.

According to the company’s roadmap, these facilities will be pivotal in feeding thermal power plants, providing a necessary buffer against potential supply shortfalls driven by reduced hydroelectric output during dry periods.

This development aligns with broader infrastructure efforts in the region.

Colombia is scheduled to begin importing liquefied natural gas through a new Pacific terminal on November 1, a project designed to provide a critical supply buffer for Ecopetrol ahead of the El Niño season.
