A potential €3-4 billion aluminum smelter in Finland has emerged as one of the largest industrial investments in the country's history.

The project represents the first new aluminum plant to be proposed in mainland Europe in three decades, signaling a significant potential shift in the continent's heavy industrial landscape.

According to Tekniikkatalous, the developers are targeting a final investment decision in 2027.

If realized, the facility would establish Finland as a strategically critical production hub for high-demand aluminum products, leveraging the region's energy infrastructure and supply chain proximity.

The scale of the proposed investment underscores the growing appetite for near-shoring heavy manufacturing in Europe.

While the aluminum sector has seen limited greenfield expansion in the region for nearly 30 years, this project aims to capitalize on rising demand for lightweight materials in automotive and aerospace sectors.
