Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, the former chairman and CEO of Dubai Ports World, has assumed leadership of Malaysia’s MMC Port Holdings.

The group’s previous chief executive has stepped down with immediate effect, according to an internal memo cited by New Straits Times.

The move places a figure with deep experience in global port operations and geopolitical risk management at the helm of a critical node in Southeast Asian trade.

MMC Port Holdings operates several key terminals in Malaysia, including the strategic Port Klang and the LNG-focused Bintulu Port.

The leadership change comes as global shipping routes face continued scrutiny due to geopolitical tensions in key chokepoints.

Bin Sulayem’s tenure at DP World was marked by aggressive global expansion and the development of infrastructure designed to mitigate route risks, including plans for a deep-water facility in the UAE intended to bypass the Strait of Hormuz.
