The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has approved quantum computing firm IonQ's $1.8 billion acquisition of SkyWater Technology, clearing the path for the deal to close.

The agency's commissioners reached the decision despite internal disagreements over whether to impose specific conditions on the transaction, according to Channel NewsAsia.

The approval marks a significant step for IonQ (QUBT.O), which aims to integrate SkyWater's foundry capabilities to support its quantum hardware development.

The deal represents a notable convergence of quantum computing and traditional semiconductor manufacturing, a sector that has seen broad investor enthusiasm in recent months.

The regulatory green light comes as semiconductor stocks have rallied, extending gains recorded throughout July.

The broader chip sector has benefited from easing supply chain concerns, including the resumption of transport routes in Kumamoto, which had previously raised fears of production disruptions.
