Brazilian low-cost carrier GOL Linhas Aéreas has commenced its first scheduled long-haul international route, launching a three-times-weekly nonstop service between Rio de Janeiro Galeão (GIG) and New York JFK.
The airline is utilizing Airbus A330 aircraft for the transatlantic flights, marking a significant expansion of its network capabilities following its emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The launch represents a strategic pivot for GOL, which has historically focused on domestic and short-haul regional routes within Latin America.
By entering the high-yield transatlantic market, the carrier aims to capture premium leisure and business traffic between Brazil and the United States, a sector previously dominated by legacy carriers and full-service competitors.
This operational milestone comes amid broader restructuring efforts by Abra Group, the holding company that owns GOL and Colombian carrier Avianca.
Abra Group had previously postponed its planned initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange, citing escalating geopolitical conflicts and market volatility as key factors.
