Google Pay has officially launched in Mauritius, marking the digital wallet's entry into the Indian Ocean island nation.

The service is being rolled out in partnership with Absa Bank (Mauritius), which serves as the first banking partner for the initiative.

The launch enables customers holding eligible Visa cards issued by Absa to make contactless payments using their smartphones, integrating the island's retail sector further into the global digital payments ecosystem.

The move aligns with a broader trend of major tech and financial institutions expanding digital wallet services into emerging and niche markets.

Recent Handelsavisen coverage highlighted similar expansions, including Samsung Electronics launching Samsung Pay in Greece and EMAG partnering with ING Bank România to integrate local payment solutions.

These developments underscore the accelerating shift toward mobile-first payment infrastructure across diverse geographic regions.
