The Hungarian parliament has appointed Pál Sonnevend, a nominee of the ruling Tisza party, as a new judge on the Constitutional Court.
The appointment was confirmed in a secret ballot on Monday, with 138 lawmakers voting in favor, six against, and no abstentions recorded among those present.
The opposition Fidesz party boycotted the vote, refusing to participate in the parliamentary session.
The development underscores the continued political polarization in Hungary, where the ruling coalition has maintained a strong majority in the legislature.
The boycott by Fidesz mirrors tactics employed during recent high-profile votes, including the passage of the government’s 17th amendment to the Basic Law.
That earlier vote also proceeded despite opposition absence, concluding after a marathon session that lasted more than ten hours.
