India emerged as the dominant force in the global liquefied natural gas market in 2025, securing 8.4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of long-term capacity.

The International Group of Liquefied Natural Gas Importers (GIIGNL) identified the South Asian nation as the most active buyer for long-term contracts during the calendar year, underscoring its accelerating role in global energy security.

The surge in Indian demand coincided with a broader rebound in global LNG contracting activity.

According to the GIIGNL’s 2026 annual report, 83 long-term sale and purchase agreements (SPAs) were signed in 2025, nearly double the 47 recorded in 2024.

This sharp increase signals renewed confidence among buyers in locking in supply amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties and shifting trade flows.

India’s aggressive contracting strategy reflects its status as the world’s fourth-largest LNG market, having surpassed Spain in recent years.
