India has surpassed Spain to become the world's fourth-largest market for liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification, with total infrastructure capacity reaching 52.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).
The milestone, detailed in the International Gas Union's World LNG Report 2026, underscores the scale of New Delhi's infrastructure build-out over the past decade.
The expansion is distributed across eight operational terminals, reflecting a strategic push to diversify energy imports and reduce reliance on pipeline gas.
By overtaking Spain, India joins the elite group of major LNG importers alongside China, Japan, and South Korea, signaling its growing influence on global gas pricing and trade flows.
This capacity growth aligns with recent government approvals for significant terminal expansions, including a ₹3,400 crore project to double the regasification capacity at IndianOil’s Ennore terminal near Chennai.
Such investments are critical as India seeks to meet rising domestic demand while managing energy security concerns.
