India is preparing to elevate maritime security and the safety of seafarers to the top of its agenda at the United Nations Security Council, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said.
The move signals a deepening diplomatic response to the ongoing volatility in key shipping lanes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz.
Jaishankar emphasized that New Delhi will advocate for a rule-based maritime order and counter-terrorism financing during its campaign for a non-permanent UNSC seat for the 2028-29 term.
The statement comes as global markets continue to price in the risks associated with shipping disruptions in the Middle East.
The diplomatic push follows India's recent directive to ship owners, managers, and recruitment agencies to cease deploying Indian seafarers on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
That order was issued in response to a sharp increase in attacks on commercial shipping in the region, highlighting the tangible human and operational costs of the geopolitical tension.
