A European industry association has called for the introduction of a cash-back system for lithium-ion batteries, aiming to tackle the growing problem of improper disposal.
The proposal suggests that consumers could receive refunds ranging from 50 cents to €50 per battery, depending on size and capacity, to encourage return to certified recycling channels.
The push comes as mismanaged lithium batteries have become a significant hazard for waste management facilities across the continent.
Incorrectly disposed units have triggered numerous fires in sorting plants and landfills, posing safety risks to workers and causing operational disruptions.
Beyond the immediate safety threat, the current disposal gap results in the loss of valuable raw materials that could otherwise be recovered and reintegrated into the supply chain.
This development underscores the broader challenge of establishing a circular economy for critical minerals in Europe.
