Japan is deploying its strategic reserves of rare earth elements to mitigate the immediate supply shock from China’s latest export restrictions.

The move by the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) signals a direct response to Beijing’s tightening grip on critical mineral flows, aiming to stabilize domestic industrial supply chains that rely heavily on these inputs.

The decision comes as China has imposed export controls on 10 US companies, targeting firms involved in the defence sector and rare earths mining.

This escalation represents a significant hardening of the ongoing trade dispute between the two economic powers, with Beijing leveraging its dominance in rare earth processing to exert pressure on Western allies and their industrial bases.

Markets are closely watching the impact of these measures on global supply chains, particularly in the automotive and electronics sectors where rare earths are essential for electric vehicle motors and high-tech components.

The deployment of strategic reserves is a stopgap measure, highlighting the vulnerability of non-Chinese producers to sudden export curbs and the urgent need for diversified supply sources.
