The Kenyan government has extended its Gas Yetu Clean Cooking Programme to Nyandarua County, distributing subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) starter kits to 20,000 low-income households.

The initiative aims to accelerate the transition from traditional biomass fuels to cleaner cooking alternatives, addressing both public health concerns and environmental targets.

This expansion reinforces the structural demand growth for LPG in East Africa, where government-led subsidy programmes are increasingly used to drive adoption among price-sensitive consumers.

The rollout in Nyandarua follows similar initiatives in other counties, underscoring a coordinated national strategy to reduce reliance on firewood and charcoal.

The move comes as LPG markets in the broader region experience shifting dynamics.

In Sri Lanka, major distributors including Litro Gas Lanka Limited and Laugfs Gas recently reduced retail prices for domestic LPG cylinders, effective July 3, reflecting softer global feedstock costs and competitive pressures.
